Do We Really Need Protection?

If you dive into the spiritual side of things, you’ll eventually encounter the elements that have negative impact on you.

These are things like dark spirits, demons, evil sorcerers, and other entities of ill repute and effects. There are things like toxic energies in ourselves and around us, like EMFs, or negative energies in Earth lines. And then are negative things like thoughts, beliefs, and emotions that we cannot seem to escape from.

Always note that these emerge from our perceptions. So a force that has negative impact on us shows itself to our psyche as one or more of the above, and filtered by our past experiences and learnings. One person might perceive extraterrestrials as the problem; another might perceive dark entities. Yet another might perceive a dark pool of indistinct negative energy. In my experience, all perceptions have validity and they give us clues as to how to address their presence.

The question of protection always comes up. Are there shields of any kind against these various afflictions? The answer is yes, but they are porous, and ultimately the porosity is governed by your own state of being.

Protection can come in the forms of spells, visualizations, an invocation, or an object. Objects can be something placed in a space, or carried on a person like jewelry.

With spells and objects, it can be very much like an arms race. Depending on what you are protecting from, often the opposing force can find a way around what you have setup. The universe and its energies are constantly shifting, and so designing the ultimate protection spell or object may require some adjusting as time goes on, and things slip through. Sometimes it is a pathway that you did not know could be used; sometimes it is a growing potency of the opposing force which can overpower the potency of the protection.

Invocations work well. They involve appeals to lineages and spirit allies to come and watch over you. Invocations usually need to be renewed, and so it is common practice to invoke it every day, like in the morning when you awaken. They also require a good spiritual connection to whatever spirit allies you invoke, which usually means adjustments of your spiritual practice. Invocations surely need internal work in the areas of beliefs, as lack of belief and doubt will weaken or totally negate any invocation you try.

Visualizations of shielding around us with energy can also have great effect. Like invocations, they do require renewal and usually every day. The strength of these visualizations does depend on the spiritual development of the person using them.

Ultimately, the effectiveness of protection comes down to what happens inside you. For example, porosity of protection is a function of fears and beliefs. The more you believe in demons and that they are out to get you, the more that they will appear. Energetically speaking, your own state of being attracts these energies to you, and you will cause any protection to step aside and let them in. Unmet needs can also weaken protections, as those become opportunities for negative energies to grab hold of and affect you.

Even the belief that you need protection generates the fear that something needs to be protected against – something to be mindful of, as we deploy protective strategies. We may develop a dependence on protection and neglect our own development, and it may fool us into thinking that nothing can touch us, even as there could be many slipping in.

As someone develops spiritually and energetically, it is usually a benefit to have some kind of protection, knowing that the protection supports them along the way. It does provide more time clear of negative interferences that might have shown up without the protection.

The ultimate protection against these elements is your own self development. These would be things like exploring non-duality, and that good/evil* is a human construct. Another one is calming our own nervous system responses to stimuli which produce negative aspects in us like pain, anger, fear, and the like. And so on. Thus, while protection strategies exist in various forms, they really need to be supported by our own self development**, and then we will see porosity grow less and less and we can experience the world with more freedom from these negative elements, and also develop the means to deal with them if they show up.

* Tibetan buddhism, while very much in the non-dual space of development, does acknowledge that spirits still can love or hate humans. That means the issue of good/evil are not present, but that doesn’t mean that nothing might want to harm us.

** As a practitioner, self-development is always present. One of the effects I have observed is that as my own development has evolved, the need for explicit protection has grown much less. There are many things interacting at once here, so hard to describe in a footnote! However, it is very instructive to see that once we dive deep into our own spiritual development, that a combination of internal development and the capabilities to deal with the occasional appearance of negative energies proves to be a path to maximizing freedom from future issues.
